High potential and gifted education

At Lockhart Central School, we are committed to delivering high potential and gifted education that encompasses a wide range of activities and opportunities designed to challenge and inspire our students. Through a variety of academic, cultural, sporting and extracurricular activities, we provide pathways for high potential and gifted students to develop their skills, explore their interests, and reach their full potential. We create an inclusive and supportive environment that recognises and nurtures each student’s unique strengths, encouraging them to embrace challenges and pursue their passions with confidence.

High potential and gifted education is delivered in-class, across the whole school and across NSW.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

In our classrooms at Lockhart Central School:

  • Our teachers engage in ongoing, targeted professional learning to support the diverse learning needs of all students, including high potential and gifted learners, through differentiated instruction, formative assessment and explicit teaching practices.
  • Supportive classroom environments promote a strong sense of belonging and encourage students to take learning risks, think creatively, collaborate with others and develop confidence as learners.
  • Students are known, valued and cared for, with learning adjusted to build on individual strengths, interests and aspirations.
Across our school

At Lockhart Central School:

  • All students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to develop leadership capability through opportunities such as the Student Representative Council, peer mentoring, student leadership roles and coaching within classrooms and across stages.
  • Through our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) allocation, students can access a broad range of experiences and special interest learning opportunities, including Agriculture and Farm-based learning, Food Technology, Creative and Performing Arts, STEM, sport and academic extension activities, supporting talent development across multiple domains.
  • Personalised learning pathways ensure students are challenged, supported and encouraged to pursue excellence in areas of strength and interest.
Across NSW

Our students participate in a wide range of state-wide and regional programs to extend and enrich learning, including academic competitions, leadership initiatives, sporting pathways, creative arts programs and targeted enrichment opportunities.

  • Through these programs, students are supported to develop their potential, connect with peers beyond the school, and build the skills, confidence and aspirations needed for success beyond school.
National Connections

We partner with local and broader community organisations to provide meaningful opportunities for student voice, leadership and advocacy, strengthening real-world learning connections and community engagement.

  • A unique feature of our school is the seismograph located on site, which feeds live data into national scientific monitoring systems. This instrument is the only seismograph between Melbourne and Sydney, providing students with a rare opportunity to engage with authentic scientific data and real-world research.
